Information on how to become an inspirational penpal
For Stanford Scientists
If you are interested in an effective outreach program that is low time-commitment but high impact, you’ve come to the right place. Penpals must be Stanford affiliates and should be students in a STEM program on campus.
The basic commitment for our Stanford penpals is to write and receive one letter per month October through June. This usually amounts to about a 45 minute per month time commitment. Penpals must guarantee participation for a full year in the program because our awesome students can’t lose their penpal in the middle of the year!
We provide letter-writing sessions (with snacks!) around two times per month where penpals can choose fun markers, colored paper, or stickers for their letters. Alternately, penpals can write letters on their own time—we have secure letter drop off locations where letters can be brought any time before each monthly deadline.
For the safety and legal protection of our Stanford penpals, we scan-read both incoming and outgoing letters to check for ‘red flag’ language.
